Will You Be Roaming In Puerto Rico?

Just want to make sure everyone checks with their cellular service carriers to see what kind of coverage you have before you leave for Puerto Rico. While US phone service will work, it might come at a steep price.

For example, I am with US Cellular. Our phones will work on roam while in Puerto Rico. However, that roaming will cost me $1.99/minute and texts will cost .30 each incoming or outgoing. Data is extra and you don't get very much for a steep price.

One option, if you find yourself in my shoes, is to go to a carrier who has its own service in Puerto Rico and purchase a pay-as-you-go phone. I went to AT&T and purchased a GoPhone, but I believe even WalMart carries these types of phones for a variety of service providers.

How does it work? You actually purchase a phone (mine generic smart phone was $40) and then pay the service fee each month as long as you need the phone. No contracts. The service I chose with AT&T allows me unlimited calls, texts, and data for $45/month.

You may not even be planning on taking your phone with you, but if you are, please make sure that whichever carrier you use or choose, they do not charge roaming fees for Puerto Rico. This way you don't come home with a very expensive souvenir from the mission trip.

See you all in a few weeks!
